Ohtani is the most unique player in baseball history. In 2023, he hit .304 with 44 home runs and went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA as a pitcher. No player has combined offensive and pitching dominance at that level since Babe Ruth.
The Dodgers’ gamble is actually quite conservative: Ohtani deferred $680 million of his contract, meaning the annual cap hit is just $46 million. For a team generating $500 million annually in revenue, that’s manageable for a player who sells out every stadium.
