Wayne Gretzky’s records aren’t just records — they’re monuments. When the NHL retired jersey #99 league-wide in 1999, it wasn’t just an honour for a player. It was an acknowledgment that some achievements transcend the sport itself.
Gretzky finished his career with 2,857 points. To put that in perspective: the second all-time scorer, Jaromir Jagr, has 1,921. Gretzky’s career assists alone (1,963) are more than anyone else’s total points. That’s not a typo.
The Great One’s dominance came from hockey sense, not brute force. He saw the ice three seconds ahead of everyone else. He invented the “office” — the space behind the net — as a dangerous offensive zone. He made average players look like stars and turned stars into legends.
Forty years later, no one has come close.
